A square foot is 12" x 12" equaling 144 square inches. A 5" tile is 25 square inches. Divide the 25 into 144 and you need 5.76 tiles per square foot. Say you have a 10' x 10' room, which is 100 square feet. You would need about 600 tiles. Always round up and add some for breakage and cut-offs.
