In 1901, six states, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia combined to form the Commonwealth of Australia which includes the Australian Capital territory and the Northern Territory. The latter became a State more recently.

New Zealand, by the way, was given the option of becoming part of Australia in 1901 but remains independent.

There were 6 british colonies in Australia before 1901. They wee the same as the current six states. The territories were added in 1911.
