The Haflinger ( Avelignese in Italy) is an Austrian pony breed developed in the late 1800's through early 1900's. It posses a lot of Arab blood as well as native coldblood draft breeds. They range in height 13.2 to 15 hands, with anything under 14.3 being preferred. They only come in chestnut with flaxen mane and tails, though many mistake them for being palomino in coloring. There is the very rare instance of a bay being born as some do carry gene's for Agouti and may pass them along.

They are strong ponies and capable of carrying heavier adults and heavy packs across rough terrain. They can at times be stubborn but are known for being gentle and great for kids. Modern show type Haflingers are moving away from the more drafty type pony and into something resembling an Arabian, which is detrimental to the breed.
