In the Old Testament,The Bible counted out women. And so anytime the Isrealites were going out to fight, women were left out. This means that those who went to Jericho were all fighing men and the biblical number was 600,000 who said to have surrounded JERICHO.

There were about 600,000 men of war counted in the second numbering of the children of Israel when they came out of Egypt, (Numbers 26).

There is no indication how many people Joshua sent to march around the walls of Jericho, but the is no reason to suppose that the whole army was not involved; all 600,000 of them

How many Israelites surrounded Jericho?

The biblical answer would be 600,000, as this is the number of fighting men said to have reached Canaan. According to Joshua 6:3, all the fighting men of Israel were to surround Jericho. However the following account seems to imply a much smaller number who took part. However, archaeologists say that there was no city at Jericho at the relevant time; therefore there was no conquest of Jericho. Israel Finkelstein said, "Today more than 90% of scholars agree that there was no Exodus from Egypt, 80% feel that that the Conquest of the Land did not take place as described in the Bible ..."AnswerJoshua 6 states that the men of war walked around the walls of Jericho. This would have equaled around 600,000 people.

When the Israelites sacked the city of Jericho what had they done?

The Bible says that when the Israelites sacked the city of Jericho that means they committed genocide, a crime against humanity by today's standards. Fortunately we know that the Israelites were not really guilty of mass murder on this occasion, because there was no city to conquer and sack. The story of the conquest was a legend that developed many centuries after the time it is supposed to have happened. Over eighty per cent of scholars agree that there was no military conquest of Canaan, as described in the Bible.AnswerAccording to Joshua 6, they marched around the city once a day for six days then 7 times on the seventh day with trumpets. After the final time around, the Israelites gave a great shout and the walls crumbled. After the walls fell, they attacked the city and destroyed everything inside save for any gold or silver and Rahab and her family for her help in hiding the Israelite spies.

Why do you think God allowed the walls of Jericho to fall?

There was widespread earthquake activity in the Levant around 1550 BCE. This appears to have brought down the walls of the last pre-Israelite city of Jericho, which was then abandoned. At the time attributed to the Israelite conquest of Canaan, scholars say that there was, at most, a small mud-brick village on the site of Jericho. However, when the Bible was written, many centuries later, the Hebrews probably knew that there had been a walled city on that city, but did not know when it was destroyed or what brought down the walls. They simply assumed that it must have been the result of their own glorious conquest of the ancient inhabitants.AnswerIt is not known what caused the wall of Jericho to fall. However, there was widespread earthquake activity in the Levant around 1550 BCE. It is possible this could have brought down the walls of the last pre-Israelite city of Jericho, which was then abandoned.
