It depends on the type! Betta fish, also commonly called siamese fighting fish or Japanese fighting fish, have been bred to a lot of different and beautiful types, and of course the prettier ones will cost more.

A common, inexpensive type of betta is the veiltail. It is so called due to the fact that its tail fin drags behind it like a bridal veil. It can be found in most pet stores for a low cost. At my local Petco a veiltail fish costs $3.99.

Females also tend to be cheaper than the males because their finnage is not as large or showy. They make wonderful pets and are just as full of personality as the males.

More expensive fin types include the crowntail (the fins have rays coming out of them like the spikes on a king's crown), the halfmoon (the fins form a half-circle when displayed), and the double tail (the tail fins are split in half and form a heart shape).

Color is generally not a factor in price at pet shops. You can find everything from common reds and blues to beautiful creamy yellows, pale shimmery whites, even purple, pink, or silver and gold!

There is no such thing as a "Japanese Fighting Fish" The fish commonly called a Siamese fighting fish (correctly called a Betta splendens) comes from the jungles and rice paddies of tropical Malaysia and Indonesia. Japan is a cold/temperate country not a tropical one.
