About 1.3 millon

___

No, that's one estimate of the number that were killed there. The extermination camp at Birkenau (Auschwitz II) was a highly efficient killing centre. Trainloads of Jews arrived, the majority was classified as unfit for work and were dead with 24 hours.

The number of Jews living in the Auschwitz complex as slave labourers was not more than 20,000 at any one time.

In the late 1980s the Auschwitz Museum calculated that at least 1.1 million prisoners were killed at the Auschwitz group of camps and that 90% of these were Jews. This is a deliberately cautious figure. Most modern Holocaust scholarship suggests figures in the range 1.1-1.5 million.

Much of the difficulty arises from:

  1. In 1945 the Soviet Union, whose troops had liberated Auschwitz, put the figure of people killed at Auschwitz at 4 million (!)
  2. Before the Soviet troops arrived the SS destroyed most of the records at Auschwitz.
  3. Rudolf Hoess, the first commandant of Auschwitz, stated that the number was 'up to 3 million'.

Please see the link for a discussion of the figures.

Between 950,000 and 2.75 Million Jews died in Auschwitz.

___________

Since 1991 the accepted figure for the total number of dead at Auschwitz has been about 1.15 million, of whom 85-90% were Jewish. Earlier, higher figures are superseded and irrelevant.
