There have been thousands of prophets. Though, only 25 is mentioned in the Quran, Jesus, Moses, Noah, Isaac, Jahya (john) and Muhammed. Peace be upon them all.
It is also important to note that some muslim scholars say it is over 240000 prophets.
The first one is Adam and the last one is Muhammed, belief in all prophets is obligatory in Islam.

The people who should be given credit for establishing Islam are all the Noble Prophets and The Sahabah (companions of Nabi pbuh) for spreading the word, also if it weren't for the Sahabah (r.a.) then Islam would not be around because after Nabi pbuh's death they carried on the message of Islam to their family etc. Hope this helps!
