It is important to note that Israel being recognized by foreign countries was not what caused the Arab flight from Israel. There were three factors that led to the Arab flight which were: Jewish/Israeli attacks on Arab neighborhoods during the Jewish-Arab Engagement of 1947-1949, Arab fear of mistreatment in any future non-Arab state, and incitement to leave by Mullahs and Arab Political leaders who promised resettlement in those areas after the conflict. After the war, which Israel won, Arabs were not allowed the Right of Return which made their flight a memorable historical event.

There are an incredible number of estimates floating around as to how many Arabs left. The most common number accepted by Academics is 700,000, but there are conservative estimates that place the number at around 450,000-500,000 and there are much more liberal estimates that place the number close to 1.2 million.
