Queen Mary I (Mary Tudor) was Catholic. Religious intolerance was prevalent and it was the Protestants which got it in the neck. Her father, King Henry VIII has dissolved the Monasteries, but her mother was Catherine of Aragon, a Spanish Catholic.

Why did Mary Queen of Scots marry the Earl of Bothwell?

Mary Queen of Scots married her third husband(The Earl) for love, although it caused her much hassle afterwords.

Why does Mary queen of Scots deserve her name bloody Mary?

She didn't, Mary Queen of Scots and Bloody Mary were two different people. Mary, Queen of Scots was born on 8th December 1542, became Queen when her father died on 14th December 1542 (yes, she was just six days old) and reigned until her execution on 24th July 1567 for allegedly plotting to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I of England. Bloody Mary was Elizabeth I's older sister. She was born on 18th February 1516, became Queen of England on 19th July 1553 and reigned until her death on 17th November 1558. She was called Bloody Mary because during her reign nearly 300 so-called heretics were executed for failing to follow Roman Catholicism.

Was Queen Elizabeth at the beheading of Mary Queen of Scots?

No, it would seem as though she was unaware that the execution was even taking place. Elizabeth was a very wishy-washy person, and after much pressuring from her advisers, she finally allowed the execution of Mary to take place. Her advisers were aware of how quickly she could change her mind, and instantly put her execution in motion. Elizabeth finally found out about her cousin's death when she heard the tolling of the bells that signaled that an exectuction had taken place. Ironically, she was greatly sadden and depressed afterwards because of Mary's death.

What years did Mary Tudor rule?

Hello!!! I myself is learing about the Tudors, Queen Elizabeth and "Bloody Mary" Mary Tudor Queen of Scots. I am not sure but I know that she died because she comitted treason against her cousin, Queen Elizabeth the First. I don't know if that helps, but I hope it does!!!;]Good Luck,Kenadie, OregonMary Queen of Scots was not "Bloody Mary", this was a nickname of Mary I. Here are some salients points about Mary Tudor:Mary Tudor (Mary I)· Born: 18 February 1516 at Greenwich, England.· Daughter of Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) and his first wife Catherine of Aragon (1485 - 1536)· Declared illegitimate when the marriage of her parents broke up.· Eventually restored to the succession after Anne Boleyn's fall.· When her brother Edward VI died in 1553, Lady Jane Grey proclaimed queen instead of Mary· Mary is restored to the throne after the end of Jane Grey's "nine days" rule.· In 1554, put down the rebellion led by Sir Thomas Wyatt. Mary is suspicious of involvement by her half sister, Elizabeth.· Mary imprisons her half sister Elizabeth in the Tower of London (March 1554) for 8 weeks.· Married Phillip II of Spain on 25 July 1554, to help reinforce the restoration of Catholicism· It is announced that Mary is pregnant in September 1554, but it proves not to be the case.· Around 300 Protestants burned at the stake for dissenting and being considered heretics (hence the title Bloody Mary).· In 1555 Phillip leaves England and returns to Spain, much to Mary's distress.· In 1556 England loses its last possession in France: Calais.· Mary is said to have declared that after her death the words "Phillip" and "Calais" would be found written on her heart.· Phillip returns to England in March 1557.· Mary announces she is pregnant and goes into confinement in February 1558, but again this proves to be a false alarm.· Mary died on 17 November 1558 of "dropsy" after reigning since 1553, leaving the succession to her half sister, Elizabeth.

What were Martin Luther's supporters known as?

Well Luther himself preferred the term "evangelists", but they were pretty much known as Protestants for a while, until his followers began calling themselves "Lutherans" to differentiate themselves from other Protestants (some sects had widely different views).

What was Queen Mary made out of?

Pretty much the same things you are.

Why shouldn't Elizabeth 1 execute Mary?

Assuming you mean Mary, Queen of Scots, and not Mary Tudor (Elizabeth's half-sister), Elizabeth was reluctant to have Mary QS executed largely because, like Elizabeth, she was an anointed queen, and related to Elizabeth. She, Mary, was offered forgiveness and life, but she continued to be a part of several plots to assassinate Elizabeth. Ultimately Elizabeth had no choice and after many years and much vacillation she signed Mary's death warrant.

The queen after Mary I was Elizabeth I. According to my enormous dictionary at home, Mary Queen of Scots was forced to leave the throne and thus had no successor, although her son became King James I of England after Elizabeth I.

How was Lady Jane Grey killed?

she posed a potential threat to Queen Mary I reign. Even though Lady Jane Grey never desired the crown while she was alive there would always be the danger of a rebellion raising up in her name. It was not an easy thing for Mary to do but she had to do what was best for the kingdom. Jane was completely innocent..."bloody" Mary was so worried she was a threat that she had to kill her. She was executed because of high treason... this is because she was queen when the true next in line was Queen Mary although Lady Jane was basically forced to take the crown by John Dudley and her parents. Queen Mary and Lady Jane actually had a good relationship and Queen Mary in the beginning refused to let her be executed it was the rebellious act of Lady Jane's father that made Queen Mary's advisers realize Lady Jane was too much of liability. Lady Jane Grey was pushed forward onto the throne in an attempt to maintain the Protestant faith. Mary gained the throne in 1553 with the country much divided on issues of religion. Lady Jane Grey was found guilty of high treason November 13, 1553. There was speculation that her life would be spared but there was a Protestant rebellion lead by Thomas Wyatt the younger in January 1554. With Mary still feeling vulnerable her fate was sealed. She was executed February 12, 1554.
