Some figures point to approximately 1,000 O-1 Bird Dogs lost in the war. The reason being, that only about 500 of those airplanes were accounted for in either the USAF or US Army (and some in the USN and USMC). The remaining of those losses are the covert operatives in Laos and Cambodia (Ravens, Air America, etc.); plus the South Viet Air Force losses...totalling approximately 1,000 Bird Dogs. One famous South Viet Bird Dog survived though...it landed on the aircraft carrier USS Midway in '75, and is currently sitting in a US museum back east.
