South Mountain is located east of Sharpsburg, Maryland, and its infamous creek, Antietam. On September 14, three important battles were fought that allowed for the ensuing Battle of Antietam a few days later. These three conflicts were the result of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's resistance to attempts by Union Major General George B. McClellan, to take advantage of the lost battle orders of Lee's army. The battles took place as follows:

1. At Turner's Gap in the South Mountains, Union forces forced their way through Confederate troops that were defending the gap;

2. Confederate forces delay Union attempts to pass through Compton's Gap, on their way to SharpsBurg; and

3. At Harper's Ferry in Virginia, Confederates surround and capture Union troops, thereby protecting supply and communications of Lee's main army with Virginia.
