State flags may be flown at the same height as the US flag, unless on the same flagpole. There is an urban legend that Texas' flag is the only one that can be, because it was an independent republic before joining the US, but that is false. There are links below.
The US flag has 50 stars, symbolizing the 50 states of the United States.
Hawaii and Alaska were the last to states because they are the farthest to the left of the USA and people were still discovering land. Their flags were the last because they made the flags when the sates were discovered.
Actually its "Betsy" Ross and yes she did make U.S. flags... but she did NOT design or make the first U.S. flags. Francis Hopkinson is credited with making the first U.S. flags with 13 six-pointed stars.
