Slave owners treated slaves more harshly .
Non-slave owners in the South were typically small farmers or laborers who did not have the wealth or resources to own slaves. They often faced economic challenges and social disadvantages compared to slave-owning families. They could also feel pressure to support the institution of slavery due to its prominence in Southern society.
I don't know whether they did, but if they did, their reasoning might be something like, it would make it look as if black people were equal to white people.
In the South, it was estimated that 350,000 slave owners held a significant number of slaves.
Slave cruelty refers to the systemic violence, abuse, and dehumanization inflicted upon enslaved individuals by slaveowners. This included physical punishments such as whipping, branding, and torture, as well as psychological and emotional abuse to maintain control and instill fear. Slave cruelty was a fundamental aspect of the institution of slavery and was used to assert power and maintain the exploitative nature of the system.
In the CSA (Confederate States of America, the south) slave owners were masters who OWNED PROPERTY...slaves. Slaves were auctioned as live-stock; property. In the north, this situation did not exist; at least officially.
Ships from Europe would buy slaves from other slave owners in Africa (YES there were slave owners in Africa!) and then transport them into docks in southern states bordering the Atlantic. There owners from the States could buy or trade them.
The spread of slavery in the South was driven by economic factors, as slavery was deeply ingrained in the plantation-based agricultural economy. The demand for labor in industries like cotton production led to the expansion of slavery. Additionally, social and cultural beliefs that supported slavery as a way of life also played a role in its spread.
They lived in fear because rights were taken away from black people in Virginia. The slave owners would get scared of them causing a revolt......
