There are 19 museums in the smithsonianThe Smithsonian includes 19 museums and galleries and the National Zoo.
According to the National Zoo, a part of the Smithsonian Institute, about 2,000 animals from about 400 different species are currently housed there. Additional Info: They have this new thing, or to me new, Animals cams! Where during visting hours you can watch the animals from live cameras in their living areas. This Zoo happened to have ones that looked really interesting and lots to choose from. Many of the Zoos have them, but often they are only with a few of the animals. The Zoo has done alot of updating their site and park trying to compete with some of the larger Zoos. From what I could find out this Zoo also claims to be the oldest "formal" Zoo in the US. The Zoo was created by an Act of Congress (really), but that was in 1889, and I think that was after the Philadephia Zoo.

better then dyeing, maybe. better then living elsewhere, no.
Probably depends on which zoo you are referring to.
No. In fact, most animals living in a zoo live longer than animals in the wild. That's because There aren't any predators, there's plenty of food, etc.
