According to the Vivisection Information Network, "Estimates exist that 100 million animals are used wordwide, which is about 274,000 per day, or three every second. However, this estimate is for vertebrates only."

According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, in the United States in 2010, 1.28 million animals were used in experiments (excluding rats, mice, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and agricultural animals used in agricultural experiments), plus an estimated 100 million mice and rats. In Canada in 2009, 3.38 million animals were used in experiments. Of those, 145,632 animals were subjected to “severe pain near, at, or above the pain tolerance threshold of unanesthetized conscious animals.†In the United Kingdom in 2012, there were 4.11 million experiments on animals, and 2.95 million of those were without anesthesia.
