How many pygmy possums are there?

Hi,that is an easy one there is only around 3000 to 4000.do you know what would happen if Pygmy possums became extinctThere are actually no accurate figures for current pygmy possum populations, as these elusive creatures are not easy for researchers to track. It was estimated that, in 1991, there were about 2,300 pygmy possums in the wild. This figure was up from the 1986 figure of around 2,000. However, a more recent study has suggested that the current figure is only around 1,800 adults.

What does a possum eats?

There is not such thing as a "normal" possum, because there are many varieties of possums.Possums are essentially herbivorous and insectivorous, meaning they will eat a variety of foods. Possums' feeding habits range from omnivores (the Common Brushtail possum) to specialist browsers of eucalyptus (Greater Glider), insectivores (Mountain Pygmy Possum) and nectar-feeders (Honey Possum). In the wild, they eat young shoots, leaves, flowers, nectar and fruit of a variety of trees and shrubs. They also feed on insects. They do not eat fish.Possums also enjoy a feed of bread and honey put out by helpful suburban homeowners. However, it is best not to feed possums as they may become dependent on people for their food supply. They tend to scavenge and have been known to eat pet foods.Note: Possums are quite different animals from the 'opossums' of North America.

How long do the babies stay in a mother opossums pouch?

The mother Possum is pregnant on average 13 days. Then the young possums will stay in the mother's pouch for about 2 months to 7 weeks. After the young have spent all that time nursing inside the pouch, they have become covered in fur, and gotten bigger. They will now venture out of her pouch, they are still very small, about 2 inches long excluding their tails. The mother will carry her young everywhere, they will cling to her fur on her back and sides, until she is ready to wean them. For the first couple of weeks they will continue to nurse, after 2 weeks they are usually ready to eat adult food, and about a month after they start eating an adult diet, they will be fully weaned. For more details, please see the sites listed below. The above refers to the Virginia Opossum, but not to true possums, which are native to Australia, and quite unrelated to opossums. There are many varieties of possums, with different gestation periods, but they tend to average between 16 and 18 days. Because there are so many varieties, and thus so many sizes, the amount of time they stay in the pouch varies. Most smaller species such as the six species of gliders stay in the pouch for about 70 days. The smallest pygmy possum, the Little Pygmy possum, only stays in the pouch for around six weeks. The much larger Brushtail possum stays in its mother's pouch for around five months.
