Hi,
that is an easy one there is only around 3000 to 4000.
do you know what would happen if Pygmy possums became extinct
There are actually no accurate figures for current pygmy possum populations, as these elusive creatures are not easy for researchers to track. It was estimated that, in 1991, there were about 2,300 pygmy possums in the wild. This figure was up from the 1986 figure of around 2,000. However, a more recent study has suggested that the current figure is only around 1,800 adults.

What do pygmy possums do when they have no food?

== == As with any species, if the mountain pygmy possum cannot eat, it will starve. This is becoming an increased possibility as, with the warming climates, the pygmy possums are coming out of hibernation up to a month before the bogong moths, (their preferred food) arrive after winter. It may be that the pygmy possum may learn to adapt, out of sheer desperation, but whether another food source can provide its unique dietary requirements is unknown. The mountain pygmy possum faces the very real possibility of extinction.
