Two
The First Battle of Bull Run, also known as the First Battle of Manassas (the name used by Confederate forces and still often used in the Southern United States), was fought on July 21, 1861, in Prince William County, Virginia, near the City of Manassas. It was the first major land battle of the American Civil War.
The Second Battle of Bull Run or Second Manassas, as it was called by the Confederacy, was fought August 28-30, 1862,as part of the American Civil War. It was the culmination of an offensive campaign waged by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia against Union Maj. Gen. John Pope's Army of Virginia, and a battle of much larger scale and numbers than the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas) fought in 1861 on the same ground.
It was surprising to many that the North could lose the first battle. The second battle was less of a surprise.
Certainly the First Bull Run was prepared in haste with raw recruits so it was anyone's to win, although Northern expectations were very high and thus a major disappointment. As for the Second Bull Run, each army had time to prepare, however, with the North having approximately 15,000 more troops and commanded by a good general, General Pope, the Union loss in many quarters may have been unexpected.
On the other hand, it should be mentioned that the battles were fought on Southern soil, and it could be said that Lee was a better general then John Pope, but that's a subjective answer on a battle in 1862.
With that said, most US Civil War historians believe that John Pope, who was soon replaced by Lincoln, was not even close to Robert E. Lee in terms of generalship skills.
Two - July 1861 and August 1862
The South won both battles of Bull Run.
The Battle of Bull Run & Chickamauga
There were two battles in this general vicinity. The first and second Battles of Bull Run. Northerners usually named battles after the closest body of water, river or creek. Southerners tended to name battles after the nearest town. In the South, these two battles are referred to as First and Second Manassas.
The question does not specify which of the two Battles of Bull Run (1861 and 1862), but both of them were clear and undeniable victories for the South, and the North was twice forced to leave the battlefield at Bull Run. Actually, the South won the majority of battles in the Civil War because of superior military leadership, but each Southern victory weakened them more, whereas the Northern ability to make war was not diminished by the many battles they lost.
