Usually email attachments are limited to 10mb. Now, you have to watch this because your files will expand approximately 33% when they are encoded. So, in actuality, the limit is more like 7.5mb. Anything large will require a premium email account or the use of a third party email/file storage website.

This is extremely variable, depending on the content of the email and types and number of attachments to the email. Also the email header grows in size as the email is handled by various servers in the process of delivery, so the route it took can be traced.

I have personally seen emails as small as under 1KB to almost 100MB, but there are no hard limits.

The standards (MIME) do not specify a size limit. However, you may find that the size may vary depending on the recipient. The service used by one recipient may impose smaller/larger limits than the service used by another. One way to avoid the arbitrary email attachment limit would be to use a service such as DropBox, Box, SkyDrive, or Google Drive to store the document and then send just the URL to that document in the email.
