Even with these "good" carbohydrates, calorie counts must be done, so as not to exceed total daily calories (as excess caloric intake causes blood glucose levels to rise).

Simple carbohycrates, in the form of table sugar, corn syrup and the like, are to be avoided. Thus, sodas, candies, cookies, cakes and pies, among others, should not be consumed by the diabetic patient, ideally.
