There may still be some isolated cases or outbreaks in limited locations around the world, including in Australia. However, the specifics and counts of cases are no longer being tracked by CDC, WHO, and most US states now that the pandemic has been declared over. Influenza cases are monitored, but specific H1N1/09 counts aren't available separately from other influenza reporting any longer.

"What is the current H1N1 swine flu pandemic situation in the UK?")

There may be some ongoing cases in limited locations around the world, including in the UK. However, the specifics and counts of cases are no longer being tracked by CDC, WHO, the US states, and most other countries, now that the pandemic has been declared over. Influenza cases are monitored, but specific H1N1/09 counts (and the lab tests needed to isolate the specific virus to be able to count them correctly) aren't being done. Influenza cases in general are monitored, but statistics are not being kept for H1N1/09 cases separately from other influenza types for reporting any longer in the post pandemic phase.

UPDATE 11/22/09

There have now been approximately 22,340 cases and 216 deaths in the UK from A-H1N1/09.

KEY POINTS FROM NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE (NHS) 16 JULY 2009
  • GP consultation rates in England for individuals presenting with flu-like illness show increased rates, above the threshold level for normal seasonal flu activity and higher than the peak activity in winter 08/09.
  • The under-5s and 5-14 year olds are the age groups predominantly affected.
  • The majority of cases continue to be mild with 26 deaths in England to date.
  • HPA estimates that there were 55,000 new cases of swine flu last week (range 30,000 - 85,000).

This estimate is based on latest weekly consultation rates for flu-like illness, taking into consideration positivity rates for Swine Flu H1N1 from HPA's virological sampling and a range of assumptions related to the numbers of people attending their GP.

Case Information:

In the week ending July 26: 110,000 new cases areestimated to have occurred (range 60,000 - 160,000). This is an increase from the figure of 100,000 estimated in the previous week.

The highest number of estimated cases is still in London, though a decrease in the number of new cases in this region was estimated. Overall, the number of new cases may be continuing to increase in the north, but may be slowing in the southof the country.

The estimated number of cases, along with the corresponding rate per 100,000 population, increased in all age groups except the 5-14 year olds. This may be due to the start of the school holidays in recent weeks. The highest estimated rate is in the under one year group, and the lowest in those aged over 65 years.

The cumulative number of deaths reported due to pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in the UK is 31. At 8am on 28 July there were 793 inpatients in hospitals in England with suspected pandemic influenza, of which 268 were newly hospitalised in the previous 24 hours.

The highest hospitalisation rate has consistently been in the under 5-year group. Hospitalisation rates have remained stable over the past two weeks.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), by 29 July, 175,785 laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza (H1N1) had been reported globally with 1012 deaths.

Levels of influenza activity were low in most other European countries.

It should be noted that these estimates are subject to a considerable amount of uncertainty.

2 July 2009

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced:

Government's announcement yesterday (July 02 2009) that the UK is moving to a new phase in the response to the current pandemic flu virus means there will be a change to the surveillance information that the Health Protection Agency will be able to provide to the media in future. . .

. . .The HPA will, therefore, no longer be providing a daily update of the numbers of cases confirmed through laboratory tests. From next week, the Health Protection Agency's Centre for Infections press office will instead issue a weekly media alert covering the various surveillance systems the Agency will be using to monitor the ongoing situation. This will also be available in the News section of the Agency's website at www.HPA.org.uk . The exact day these new weekly alerts will start will be confirmed next week.

The statistics are no longer being tracked. There may be some ongoing cases in limited locations around the world, including in Britain and the UK. That data was not consistently provided and is no longer being tracked by WHO. There may be some ongoing cases in limited locations around the world, including in China. Since the pandemic is in the post pandemic phase, no counts are being kept. There may be some ongoing cases in limited locations around the world, including in Victoria. Australia and other nations are no longer required to report this information to WHO. The numbers are no longer accurate. There may be some ongoing cases in limited locations around the world, including in Perth.
