This depend on the definition of countries. The United Nations recognises 192 nations. However, the number of sovereign states is 193. The one sovereign state that is not a member of the United Nations is the Vatican City. To add to the confusion, there are 10 other states that do have control over their own land, but are not widely recognised as nations by members of the United Nations. These states are Abkhazia, Kosovo, Nagorno-Karabakh, Northern Cyprus, Palestine, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Somaliland, South Ossetia, Taiwan and Transnistria. So there are either 192, 193, 202 or 203 countries. You decide.
