Something that has overall reign over something else. For example: Gibraltar (An Island off the coast of Spain) has the UK as its sovereign (owner) of sorts. During the collapse of the British Empire, many countries split off from the Empire and became independent countries. Some remained to stay, and so the UK has sovereignty over these countries.
The British Empire was all the countries in the world that were at one time a part of British Sovreignity. That is to say the British King or Queen laid claim to those territories as part of what that King or Queen ruled over. (Or at least the British Government did in the name of the Monarch) Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India & South Africa were the main areas, but there were many, many others.It was hte biggest Empire the world has ever seen by miles.
