Is the Caribbean underdeveloped and dependent?

Yes the majority of Caribbean countries are underdeveloped and dependent, firstly I am not biased towards Caribbean countries, I am from Jamaica. I have recently gotten this question in Sociology and had to do extensive research to find the correct answer. Firstly you have to define the Caribbean and show that the Caribbean has more in common than a similar geographical context like we are all washed by the Caribbean Sea, Mexico is washed by the Caribbean Sea and we would not go so far as to call it a Caribbean country. All Caribbean countries have s similar historical context with that being the experience of the plantation society, slavery, exploitation by European colonialist powers etc. Next define the terms dependency and underdevelopment in the terms of the essay, note underdevelopment is not the same as undevelopment, the two terms are different. Underdevelopment refers to a lack of resources and technological and economical sustainability, undevelopment refers to a presence of refers to the little use of present sustainable resources. Then find Caribbean countries to support your answer supplemented by the use of present day events eg the IMF agreement with Jamaica The difficult part of this essay is to find an occurrence with one of the richer Caribbean countries and extrapolating it to a the rest of the Caribbean, eg some instance of dependency on the part of Cayman or the Bahamas Hope this little info helped
