If you already "know" core C++ programming then a reasonably intelligent programmer can "learn" (become familiar enough to write basic programs with the javadoc only a Google away) in around 2-4 weeks of 8 hour days (you'll need the rest time for what you've learned to gel in your grey matter). Most of this time is not spent learning actual language differences (garbage collection will take several hours to understand and months/years to trust, while many other things are identical to C/C++ or nearly so). The time is to learn your way around the java.* packages (a.k.a. class libraries, a term somewhat more familiar to C/C++ folks). There is no equivalent in C/C++, this is a new way of thinking in Java. Imagine if stdio wasn't the only standard library in C, but there were dozens of them that everyone knew and used regularly, for all sorts of purposes. That is the java.* packages, and why Java has taken off as a language (GC fanatics can believe what they want, it's all that built-in function that won the day).
At least 2 weeks of dedicated preparation is required to pass the SCJP certification exam.
SCJP stands for Sun Certified Java Professional SCWCD stands for Sun Certified Web Component Developer SCJP is a certification for understanding on core java concepts whereas SCWCD is for web developers. It depends on your definition of "expertise", but I think that it means that you are the holder of multiple Java certifications, such as the Microsoft CME and the Sun SCJP.
The ability to make changes in your code without breaking the code of all others who use your code is a key benefit of encapsulation. You should always hide implementation details. To elaborate, you must always have your variables as private and then have a set of public methods that others can use to access your variables. Since the methods are public anyone can access them, but since they are in your class you can ensure that the code works the way that is best for you. So in a situation that you want to alter your code, all you have to do is modify your methods. No one gets hurt because i am just using your method names in my code and the code inside your method doesnt bother me much. If you want maintainability, flexibility, and extensibility (and I guess, you do), your design must include encapsulation. How do you do that? • Keep instance variables protected (with an access modifier, mostly private). • Make public accessor methods, and force calling code to use those methods rather than directly accessing the instance variable. • For the methods, use the JavaBeans naming convention of set and get. source- SCJP book by Kathy and Bert
