I don't believe anyone died during this eruption. There were several small explosive events related to the formation and collapse of new lava domes, however there were no pyroclastic deposits and air fall deposits reached only 7000 m above sea level.

It is the Popocatepetl Volcano; it is not 'extremely violent' but quite active. Nowadays it has constant fumaroles emanating from the crater, and last eruption occurred on December of 2000.
2000 people died
According to the US Geological Survey for the years from 2000 to 2010 there have been an average of 63,000 deaths per year due to earthquakes globally. This is based on the estimated number of earthquake deaths annually. The annual estimated figures can vary significantly from year to year depending on the occurrence and location of large earthquakes. For example in 2000 there were only 231 estimated earthquake deaths globally, whereas in 2004 there were 228,802 (which most likely corresponds to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake) and in 2010 there have been an estimated 226,215 (due in part to the very large number of deaths in the January 2010 Haitian earthquake). Please see the related links for the source of this data and for further information on some of the large earthquakes mentioned.
My dad told me it was probably because it had three zeros or something like that. But nothing ever really happened in year 2000.Many people comitted suicide befor year 2000 so they wouldn't suffer the supposebly deadly events. But surely this is not a spcific answer.

False. In fact, the Popocatepetl has had 15 mayor eruptions since it was first discovered by Westerners (1519) and the largest eruption since the last 1,200 years happened on December of the year 2000, which included smoke, ash and lava, but no casualties have ever been recorded for such volcano.
