Stingrays are often very docile and calm creatures and have a reaction of gliding away from any commotion. Some, however, do have a hostile side. Contact with the stinger, which is usually only used for self-defense, is only life threatening if it pierces a vital organ. The most that will occur if say the stinger is in a leg is pain, swelling, and muscle cramps which can lead to infection if not treated properly. The actual amount of deaths is not certain but at least seventeen deaths have occurred since 1996. Steve Irwin, the "Crocodile Hunter," was only one of three deaths ever recorded in Australian history.
