There are an infinite number of lines of latitude and longitude. It depends on what sort of map you are looking at. A map of the world may show lines 10 or 15 degrees apart. A map of a country may show lines 2, 5 or 10 degrees apart. A map of a region within a country may show lines 1 degree or 30 minutes apart. A map of a local area such as a city, may show lines minutes and seconds apart.

There can be any number of degrees difference, depending on how you divide it. There can be a one degree, one minute or even a one second difference between each line of latitude and longitude.

However, if you mean those lines printed on maps and globes, they are usually in differences of 10 degrees for both latitude and longitude. There can be lines up to one or two degrees difference in atlases.

You need to go to the library and look at a few different maps and globes.

If you'll put that much effort into it, you'll discover immediately that different

maps and globes have different sets of lines printed on them. Some have

more lines, some have fewer lines, and some have no lines at all.

When you think about this ... and I highly recommend doing that ... you'll realize

that there's no official set of 'lines', any more than there's an official set of marks

on rulers and tape measures. Some of those have marks every 16th of an inch,

some have marks every quarter inch, and some only have a mark every inch.

I use mapping software that can print 1,800 lines in every degree if I want them.

When I do that, the distance between each two 'lines' of latitude is about 200 feet.

I have no way of knowing how many 'lines' of latitude will show up on the next

map you happen to see. And neither do you. All I can tell you is that regardless of

whether or not there any lines to mark them, each degreeof latitude corresponds

to a north/south distance of about 69.1 miles (111.2 km).

Degrees of latitude are parallel so the distance between each degree remains

almost constant but since degrees of longitude are farthest apart at the equator

and converge at the poles, their distance varies greatly.

Each degree of latitude is approximately 69 miles (111 kilometers) apart. The

range varies (due to the earth's slightly ellipsoid shape) from 68.703 miles

(110.567 km) at the equator to 69.407 (111.699 km) at the poles. This is

convenient because each minute (1/60th of a degree) is approximately one mile.

A degree of longitude is widest at the equator at 69.172 miles (111.321) and

gradually shrinks to zero at the poles. At 40° north or south the distance

between a degree of longitude is 53 miles (85 km).

Answer #1 to the question:

There is no official, standard set of "lines", and anybody can draw a line at any

latitude or any longitude where they want to see a line. Some maps and globes

have lines printed every 10 degrees. Some have lines every 15 degrees, some

have lines printed every 30 degrees, and some maps and globes have no lines

printed on them at all. There's no way for me to know the spacing of the lines

of latitude on Asia on the map you're looking at.

When you talk about "in between", we know right away that you're going to tell us about

TWO different places. Sadly, you've only given us one of them ... "the map". We have no

idea yet where the other place is, so there's no way to start figuring out the distance in

between them.

Now, if you want the difference in their latitudes, then you haven't even given us ONE of

the places yet, because we don't know what latitude "the map" is at.

So, in effect, you've given us even less information then you would have, if you and I

have never met and one day I phone you up and ask you "How far am I from ?".

That question is a lot like asking "What's the distance between the marks on a ruler ?"

In the case of longitude, just like the ruler, it depends on how many lines or marks the
manufacturer decided to print.

There isn't one standard set of "lines" that everybody must use. Some maps and globes
have "lines" printed every 10 degrees, others have lines printed every 15, 20, or 30 degrees,
and some maps and globes have no lines printed on them at all.

On the mapping software that I use, I can make the interval between the lines as large or
small as I want. The software can print a line every 2 seconds of longitude if I want them,
for a total of 648,000 lines around the globe ! I've never needed them spaced that close,
but it's a comfort to know that they're available if I ever need them. It would be something
like etching a line every thousandth of an inch on the ruler.
