The zoo has 4,000 animals representing 600 species, there has been some rumors of closing exhibits due to the slow economy, but the zoo has recently received the new Spotted Hyenas for the African Plains, and the Aardvarks have gone into the Carter Giraffe House. According to the 2010 Annual Report, the Animal Census shows 6,919 animals in the Bronx Zoo. If the Census is widened to include all five of the parks under the supervision of the Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx, Central Park, Queens and Prospect Park Zoos and the NY Aquarium), there are 12,226 animals species.
