This depends which shell it is up to. Helium has a full shell and it only has 2 electrons. Neon then, still with a full outer shell has 8 on the full outer shell with 2 inside those 8.

This keeps changing as you go up. I do believe the amount of electrons on the outer shell goes 2, 8, 8, 18, 18, 32. Those apply to the stable elements (in order) Helium, Neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon and Radon.

Those numbers apply to the outside shell, please note all the shells below that outside one still exist and are still full.

if the rings are filled up the atom is stable. the first ring holds four the second ring holds 8 i believe.
