How many emirates are there in the United Arab Emirates?

There are seven emirates that form the UAE and these are:

• Abu Dhabi (the capital)
• Dubai
• Sharjah
• Fujeirah
• Umm Al Quwain
• Ajman
• Ras al Khaimah

Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain and Fujairah became unified in 1971 and Ras al-Khaimah joined the union in 1972.

Abu Dhabi is its capital.

Its President is Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, son of the late president Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

United Arab Emirates is a Federal Constitutional Monarchy. The country is a federation of 7 absolute monarchies (emirates). It has a President who is the head of state and a Prime Minister who is the head of government. Though elected by the Supreme Council, the positions are hereditary and the emir of Abu Dhabi holds the presidency, and the emir of Dubai is prime minister.

The President and the Prime Minister (National Government) take care of duties such as foreign affairs, security and defence, nationality and Immigration issues, education, public health, currency, postal, telephone and other communications services, air traffic control, licensing of aircraft, labour relations, banking, delimitation of territorial waters and extradition of criminals.

All responsibilities not granted to the national government are reserved to the emirates. All emirates have their own secular and Islamic Law for civil, criminal, and high courts.
