Universities had not yet been established in the first century, so the only basis of comparison that the ancients had was how wise or how learned a person seemed. Clues about Paul come from Galatians. He was "advanced in Judaism" and "zealous for the traditions" (Gal 1:14). He was an itinerant acquainted with the diaspora synagogues in Syria and had once "preached circumcision" (Gal 5:11). This image sits uneasily with that of the young boy who held the cloaks as they stoned Stephen and shortly afterwards went about persecuting Christians.
Burton L. Mack (Who Wrote the New Testament) concludes that Paul was a leading figure among Jewish synagogues in Syria, conspicuously involved in their intellectual life as a proponent of Pharisaic standards. Paul was no mere tentmaker, but both literate and learned, at least in religious matters.

Saint Paul believed that the message of Jesus was for all people, so he converted Gentiles into the Christian community. This angered some Palestinian Christians.Paul the Apostle was known as the 'Apostle to the Gentiles.' He undertook a number of missionary journeys in which he preached to the gentiles.
