Prior to the battle for Fort Sumter in April of 1861, the Confederacy has take over sixteen federal forts. In each case, the Union commanders surrendered and no shots were fired.
Confederate shore batteries fired on Fort Sumter and caused it surrender. Prior to this the US ship "Star of the West" had attempted to re-supply the fort, but had been fired on and caused it to retreat. After this Lincoln said he would resupply the fort and the South opened fire a month later.
