There are no accurate statistics for the number killed in the American Revolution.

The actual casualties of battle are estimated at:

  • 6,800 Revolutionaries
  • 4,000 British

What must be taken into consideration is that there were thousands who died from starvation and disease due to unhygienic conditions for prisoners of war, especially those held in British prison ships.

Another contributing factor was a smallpox epidemic that spread throughout North America from Canada to Mexico (1775-82) which ravaged prisoner of war camps.

Estimates of losses in addition to battle causalities are 17,000-20,000 deaths as a result of disease, including about 8,000-12,000 who died while prisoners of war.
