Depends on how you define 'front.' The Germans had an Eastern Front for the war with Russia, and the Western Front for the war with the Allies in Europe. And there were the fronts in Africa, and later a Southern Front when the Allies invaded Italy. The Americans fought in two primary theaters, the Atlantic and the Pacific.
Several; that's why it was called a "World War". In Europe alone, we could count four geographical "fronts"; the "Eastern Front", where the battles followed a more-or-less definable "front" of battle between the Germans and the Russians. The "Western front", between Germany and the Allied Powers (Britain, France & the United States) after the Normandy invasion. The Italian front, with the Americans and British invading Sicily and then Italy, and a "northern front", the battles within Scandinavia.
The African Front between the Germans and the British and Americans on both the eastern and western sides; in Egypt in the early part of the war, and from both Egypt and from Algeria after mid-1942 or so.
In the Pacific, there was never a "front", per se; the Naval war in the Pacific was much more fluid, with battles around specific target islands. You might separate the battles in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska from the battles in the Philippines and the southern Pacific, but after the Battle of Midway (June 1942) the Japanese weren't really capable of preventing the US Navy from sailing pretty much wherever they wanted to.
WW II was a multiple front war because major fighting took place in many different locations around the world.

The battlegrounds of World War 1.
Russia helped the war effort on the western front in the world war 1 because in the ww1 Russia wanted to save it's allies and austria-hungary were attacking their ally that's why they entered to help their allies in the war. They attacked Germany on their front which is called the eastern front, the Russians were failing because Germans were attacking them but the Russians had many soldiers and weapon to defend their country on their front.
World War Two was fought in the Pacific and the Atlantic and Western Europe and Eastern Europe (and Africa) at the same time. So technically the war was fought on many fronts. In Europe it was a two front war on the West and East side. When you consider the USA the war was fought on two sides of the nation in two different oceans and different countries so they considered it a two front war too.
