First of all it is handicapped, if it is a state of being. Joe is a handicapped man. I"ll use that as an example. One has no idea how many handicapped children take their own lives- but many are in specialized institutions for the specific problem- schools and homes for the Blind, Deaf, etc.l so this complicates matters. It has been documented the most ridiculed health problem ( not strictly speaking a handicap but it can cause problems in later life) is somewhat oddly- Obsesity. Probably second place is a real if corrected handicap- visual impairment. There are at least a dozen nasty slang expressions for eyeglass wearers, and Anti-specs prejudice is real and is not confined to some occupations such as the Air Force or Fire Dept for performance reasons. - stop and think of any time you have ever seen an eyeglass wearer as any kind of action-adventure or good-guy character on a television or movie drama. Over half the population wears specs, something one would never gather from Hollywood and Tv-land. I am not talking about fantasy characters such as Harry Potter and Clark Kent, stop and think, have you ever seen a guy wearing specs with a female friend- on TV or the movies? it is rare indeed. Oddly, hearing loss is rarely made fun of ( there are no slang terms aside from Dummy which has other meanings) Maybe because it is not a visible handicap and does not photograph. The problems most ridiculed- Fatness, specs , and mobility handicaps are those that are visible, shallow indeed.
