According to Cenus Bureau figures, in 2003 there were 17 million students enrolled in High School. Other readings of other Census Bureau figures would have this at over 15 million for 2006. Figures are often scattered about and broke down in a variety of ways by states and public versus private, and various combinations of grade levels.
If one said there are between 15 and 20 million students currently enrolled in High School one way or another for the 2009/2010 year, you would be fairly accurate.
People in high-school really depend. Usually it is 14 turning 15 in freshman year, 15 turning 16 in sophomore year, 16 turning 17 in junior year, and 17 turning 18 in senior year. But that is only if you haven't skipped a grade, got heldback, started early, or started later. Its more likely 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and occasionally 19.
