Well, sometimes adults and children worked more than half a day. The adults sometimes never stopped working. They took small breaks when allowed and only slept at the end of their day(they only slept only six hours then they would be woken up and told to get back to work).

The children were also very busy workers. They used children to fix hard to reach parts of machines because adults were too big. Some of these machines were very dangerous because you could lose a part of your foot or hand. Good thing work has evolved into modern more practical jobs and methods of work. Now the only work children do is home chores, school work, and for older kids, sometimes a part time job at the local store to earn extra money for little trinkets they eye on television.

Adults still work long hours but at least it is more comfortable and safer than working in a dusty, damp, room filled with loud machines and sharp pieces of metal.

Why did people build most early factories along rivers?

Factories need transportation to bring in supplies needed inside the factory and to ship what is produced in the factory out to stores, the public, etc. Early factories didn't have the use of railroad and trucking transportation, so the quickest way for these early factories to bring things to the factory and ship goods out of the factory was by water. Therefore, they were built along waterways like rivers.

What cultural impact did spinning jenny have on society?

The spinning Jenny brought factory work to society. Before factories when something was made it was made individually for a specific person, but the invention of factories meant that things could be made on a larger scale. Work hours, shift work, weekends were all created because of factories. The factories wanted to have people work 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week so they needed to have people work in shifts. Out of that came the ideas about having two days off a week, holidays off, and eventually overtime pay. The shift in society became production oriented and led to factory towns, unions, urbanization of America, and worker protection laws. The modern society we have today was built on the foundation of factory work and one reason there are problems today is there is a shift from people working in factories to people working in technology or service industries, but some people are still thinking in the old factory ways.
