The average adult needs about 7 hours of sleep.

Teenagers under 15 may need about 10 hours of sleep as they are in a state of metabolic growth. 15 + need roughly 8 hours but can function to full capticity on around 7.

Also, oversleeping can have negative side effects, including a slowed metabolism which can lead to weight gain and inability to "start up" to get things done.

8 hours is just fine, as long as you stick with 8 hours. Average person in the US gets 7.5 hrs of sleep.
