For soldiers? Depending were they where. If a soldier was lucky enought to sleep in Barracks or Fort, they would sleep in cots. Though many shoulders had to sleep with out these "comforts." they normal on the ground, and whatever they can find. It would be horrible, espcially in the cold. The common infantryman/Grunt would know what it was like to be wet and cold , a sleeping bag would get wet and stay that way , the ground would be uncomfortable because of rocks and the hard ground/mud , in a combat zone you would have to sleep with your boots on in case of attack , insects would be a problem , sleeping comfortably would be a challenge .
