The process of producing sperm cells is called spermatogenesis. Sperm production begins before puberty through the increase in the number of precursor cells called spermatogonia. They in turn double in number through mitotic cell division and become primary and secondary spermatocytes. Then through two stages of cellular division called meiosis, the primary spermatocytes become 4 spermatids, which then further develop into spermatozoa, or sperm.With regard to the cellular divisions involved, mitosis maintains the same number of chromosomes (46 in humans) in the nucleus of the resulting twin daughter cells after division, whereas in meiosis, the four resulting daughter cells have only 23 chromosomes each.
