It's hard to say exactly for sure without seeing the citation. Representative Gohmert served as a commissioned officer in the US Army's JAG Corps, meaning he was a basically a lawyer. It is fairly typical, especially during peacetime (which is when Gohmert served- between 1978 and 1982), for a soldier to be given an award for completing their tour of duty.I served in the Army as a low ranking enlisted soldier, and when I finished my tour of duty (also during peacetime) I was awarded an Army Achievement Medal (AAM). In my experience, an officer receives the MSM in the same situation, and non-commissioned officers (ie. sergeants) received Army Commendation Medals. So it's likely, since Gohmert was a JAG Officer and never was in combat, that is why he was awarded the medal.
He has a zero percent (0%) rating by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and is NOT supportive of gay and lesbian rights, including same-sex marriage. He has given speeches in which he asserted that same-sex marriage was related to bestiality.

No, this is not true at all. This is another example of political rhetoric from an opponent of President Obama, but there is not one shred of evidence to support it. Even most Republicans have not agreed with this accusation, which was made by Republican congressman Louie Gohmert of Texas, who is well-known for making outrageous statements. There is nothing wrong with Mr. Gohmert or anyone else, disagreeing with the president, but making false assertions about the people in Mr. Obama's cabinet or his administration (men and women who come from both political parties and from all walks of life) dishonors their service.
