I change my girlfrinds oil on her 2002 4 cyl. Rav4 and it takes about 4 quarts. It might be officially stated like 3.9 or 4.1 quarts, but it won't make any difference. I run 6 quarts in my truck and it calls for 4.8. If it's american, then don't put too much oil in it. The major reason why is the bottom of the crankshaft hitting the oil in the resavoir causing it to foam and bubble, reaching the upper head, causing a huge amount of pressure.
