According to the UAE National Bureau of statistics published 2011 (estimated):

Last full population census: 2005, although I think one has been done since then the results have not been collated or reported.

Total estimated population**: 5,473,972 (July 2013 est.)

Emirati 19% (local nationals)

other Arab and Iranian 23%

South Asian 50%

other expatriates (includes Westerners and East Asians) 8% (1982)

note: less than 20% are UAE citizens (1982)

Population on the basis of religion:

Muslim (Islam - official) 96% (Shia 16%), other (includes Christian, Hindu) 4%

**These figures are estimates and don't take into account effects of the recession during which a large number of expatriates left the country, or the subsequent upturn in the economy (2013/4), which has again lead to an increase in the "permanent" population.
