I have a 2001 Xterra which gets poor mileage and I have driven over 30 miles after the light came on on the highway.
It comes on whenever a failure is detected, not at specific mileage.

Assuming this is a mk6 transit (2001>) this is the service light. it comes on at approx every 15,000 miles to indicate that service is due.
