It depends on how much was in it to start with. However, the fuel warning light nominally comes on with 30 miles to go but it is fairly arbitrary.
I'm not sure what you mean by acts like it is running out of gas....a car runs fine until it runs out of gas...at which point it stops and won't start again until you put gas in. There is no difference in the way it acts on the first or last drop.

Drive it until it runs out
I have a 2010 Nissan Maxima SV Sport Package and near the odometer it tells you how many miles you have left until the gas runs out completely. As a woman, I love this feature, because I hate pumping gas. So if it says I have 5 miles to drive until my gas runs out and it will take me 2 miles to get home for my husband to get me more gas, I'm happy.
If the fuel system is still holding pressure the car will start and run until the fuel runs out, The relay turns on the fuel pump.
Normally they will last at least 100,000 to 150,000 miles but there is no guarantee they will last that long. A partially clogged fuel filter will shorten the life of the pump. Running the car until it runs of of gas will also shorten it's life.
Check your fuel pressure, it should be around 48 psi at the fuel rail. It sounds like your fuel pump is overheating.
Sounds like a fuel pump problem. If it is an electric pump, it usually runs until it gets hot and quits. Sounds like a new fuel pump would help

Truck drivers use fuel for their trucks until it runs out. Firefighters use water from the fire hydrant until it is used up. Runners conserve drinks using it as jump starts ( a little bit like fuel )
What kind?Electrics, forever.Diesels, until their fuel runs out, but that usually well over a thousand miles.Steam was mostly limited by the water it used - normally below 100 miles..... but there were special tricks (like water pans) that allowed up to 1000 miles non-stop.
The instrument cluster will give you a warning, that the vehicle will not start in X amount of miles.
