It all depends what your after Category's, servers like: PvP Survival Creative Or Servers that supports mods, which are longer to list, have a look on Planet Minecraft which is a site on servers. Then go on the server that suits you best.
Classic Servers: Classic servers are free for all to play. Creative/Survival/Hardcore: Many of these servers require you to fill in an application in the servers "official" thread on the Minecraft forum. Most of the time, servers are "whitelisted". Which means you cannot access the server unless your application has been approved. You will be automatically kicked by the server if it does not recognise your name. Some servers are not whitelisted and are free for anybody to join on condition that you follow the server rules. Take a look at the Minecraft forums to see which servers require you to apply or which are free for anybody to join.
colony.redirectme.net This one sucks cuz you have to figure out "2x + 9 = x + 78" to do anything
At least 98% of all Minecraft servers are free. Classic Minecraft is always free and does not require you to buy and download the full version of the game. However it has limited abilities and blocks compared to the full version. Minecraft creative and Minecraft survival require you to buy the full version. Once you have bought the full version, full version servers are completely free. See the related links below for more information.
You play online in Minecraft by connecting to servers. Multiplayer servers will have either an IP, or a DNS (such as craftmine.mchost.net as an example). They both require the same method to connect - Direct connect and paste or type the IP/DNS in the "Server Address" what is said. To find some Minecraft servers, check out the official Minecraft forum site, in the related links below.
There is a awesome one called BrotherCraft (Creative), but you have to buy the blocks and items. I got banned for no reason :( i really liked it.
No, there is not any good servers for Minecraft 1.6.6. In fact, there are no more 1.6.6 servers at all. There are only updated servers. My recamendation is for you to update minecraft. All of the servers, or the most active, always update.
There are not many Beta servers up at the moment, but the ones that are can be found with Google. engamma.dyndns.org
