Scientology claims that there are approximately 8 million Scientologists, world-wide. However, Heber Jentzsch, President of the Church of Scientology, admitted in a TV interview that this number includes every person who has ever purchased a book, taken a service or otherwise shown any interest in Scientology whatsoever. Third-party sources have estimated the number of active Scientologists as 55,000 in the US, 1523 in Canada, 741 in Australia.

Governments don't take statistics on religious membership. There are no official records. Many people only share their religious views within a closed number of friends.

Statistics and people who claim to know the number are extremely unreliable, as most of the time these statistics base research on social media like Facebook, where only a insignificant percentage of people set their religious view to display on public.

The only place to find this information would be from Scientology itself. 11'000 Scientology churches and organizations around the world keep constant record of people on courses. There are also courses being offered online on the Scientology website. By summing the number of people who had courses on these 11'000 organization and online one could make a more precise estimate.

According to official Scientology publications, Over 32 million visitors have viewed more than 70 million videos in 17 languages on the Scientology website in the last 12 months. The number of people newly introduced to Scientology and starting on training or counseling per week exceeds 26 times any previous week in history.

Usually by word of mouth, often by reading a book, seeing promotional materials or visiting a Church of Scientology. Sometimes one becomes interested by meeting a Scientologist and sensing that person has "something"-a positive attitude toward life, certainty, self-confidence and happiness, which they too would like to have. Fundamentally, people get into Scientology because they want to improve something in their lives or because they wish to help others improve and thus create a better civilization.

How many scientologists are there?

There are about 10 million that ever took a course. However the number of active members is far below that. According to the CoS itself, there are millions of scientologists. One frequently cited survey stated that there are less then 100.000 (55.000 in 2001), but the publisher of that survey retracted their results because the methodology was designed to measure adherents of major religious factions such as Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc. Attendance at Scientology events are very large in some parts of the world. The church has dozens or hundreds of facilities and churches around the world. Although the exact number of "Scientologists" is unknown, it is clearly well over 100,000 and is most likely in the millions. Part of the uncertainty arises from the fact that there is no "membership" program in most countries, and that current polling methods for religious affiliation are not suited for determining numbers of Scientologists.
