There are no correct stats on this. Unless the person is a long-time drinker and under a doctor's care then many people die from complications of drinking too much .... liver problems, mental degeneration, heart problems and the list goes on. If a man/woman was an alcoholic and died from a heart attack then that is what is put down on the death certificate. Only if the coroner does an autopsy can one tell and unless it is an unnatural death or the family requests an autopsy many cases of alcoholic deaths slip through the cracks. Marcy There are two parts to this, I think. One is, how many people die as the result of the damage caused to their body through the abuse of alcohol. The other is, how many people die as a result of behavior that they wouldn't indulge in if they weren't alcoholic. It is believed by some psychologists that 80% of men in prison for violent offences were under the influence of some mood altering chemical when they committed the crime that they are in prison to pay for. Do deaths in prison from violence count as deaths caused by alcohol? No. But, they could be included, and not without good reason. A conservative estimate would be that the number of deaths due to Alcoholism is greater than the total of traffic deaths per year. Add in the people that violent alcoholics murder, and the alcoholics who are murdered as a result of their behavior...alcoholics who are listed as suicides with no mention of alcoholism.... The number is high. But, as a society, we're willing to accept that. The dismal failure of Prohibition proved that, as a society, we demand the right to get drunk and will, no matter what the law says. Lots of people every year. Year in, year out. Apparently, it's a problem that isn't going away any time soon. Speaking strictly with stats, 80 K die from alcohol poisoning. 30 K die from suicide, 22 K from homicide, 50K from highway accidents, 250 K die from assorted "death by misadventure": stupid crap like trying to fly off the garage with paper wings. I bet you could attribute 1/2 of all those deaths to alcohol directly or in directly. So call it around 250,000 before factoring in heart and liver disease. It's interesting to note that in Florida, 466 deaths were attributed to alcohol od's alone, while 0 deaths were attributed to marijuana. H-m-m-m.
No one really knows the answer to that question and estimates vary widely/
Fortunately, very few people die from alcohol poisoning.

Yes: Many people have died from alcohol poisoning. Not only that, some people have died from drinking too much that they fall asleep in the cold and wet and freeze to death without ever waking up.

Alcohol can kill you. Alcohol is actually a poison. If you drink too much, it can overload your liver. The liver processes the alcohol and expels it through the body. Another way it can kill you is if your passed out, and laying on your back, you can vomit and that can choke/suffocate you.Yes, from alcohol poisoning. Too much of a good thing, eh? XD
Approximately 1,519 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including alcohol poisoning, each year.
Approximately 2000 college students nationwide between the ages of 18-25 die each year from alcohol poisoning. Just as many have alcohol related injuries.
People don't die from alcohol, only from abusing it.
