In the year 79, Mount Vesuvius in Italy erupted without warning, and killed thousands when the city pf Pompei was buried in ash and lava.
In 1902, Mt Pelee in Martinique erupted, killing 29,000.
On the other hand, the recent series of eruptions of Mount Kilauea has killed no one in the last 30 years.
